Media and misinformation: developing historical societal consultancy as a strategic resource in times of change

The doctoral research fits in with a relatively new sub-discipline within the field of history: applied history. The Corvus project attempts to establish a social role for historians. Through the various subprojects practical tools and methods must be developed, that enable historians to play a supporting role for Flemish actors. This subproject focuses on the "media" aspect, including the use of history in information wars. It examines the challenges that traditional media and investigative journalism face. When devising the role of history for the traditional media, a method should be developed to prevent the dissemination of incorrect information. Through collaboration with various partners, contemporary phenomena concerning media can be studied in different contexts. First of all, there is the valuable expertise of the Flemish Peace Institute, which advises the Flemish parliament on matters such as propaganda. Furthermore, the collaboration with media channels VTM Nieuws, Knack and Panache offers a varied and broad view of the Flemish media landscape. Finally, the link with the Flemish Department of Culture, Youth and Media creates the bridge with the policy makers.
