A Reflection on Light as an Artistic Medium

It is a challenge to objectively capture an image or a situation. Mankind can only understand images and situations subjectively, and through interpretation. However, a computer can capture analogue images or situations in a very objective manner and, without any need for consensus, form a code, a binary code. This code is beyond our reach and is illegible. The summoning up or translating of this ‘virtual intangibility’ is the topic of my doctoral research.

The objective of my research was to question whether I could develop a ‘live’ installation that, from this elusive virtual world or unreadable binary code, could translate an image or situation into an objectively tangible image. Is it possible to capture the most tangible structure of a work of art through the digital binary code of an image or situation?
