Jean Gerson (1363-1429) and his Reception in the Late Medieval and Early Modern Catholic Tradition: the Case of Leuven

The project, which is an integral part of a comprehensive study of Jean Gerson’s legacy, concerns especially his 16th century reception in the Leuven university milieus. Although Gerson’s name is well known, his influence on subsequent generations, which is monumental, has not yet been the subject of systematic research. Matusevich's research is the sole direct contribution to this field, and it relates to research agendas of a number of Leuven scholars in the field of 16th century philosophy, theology, spirituality, and law. The inquiry of Gerson’s spirituality matches the interests of a Leuven GOA-group - of which François is a co-promoter - in the late medieval Catholic turn toward interiority, as well as in the connection between Gerson and the Leuven theologian Jacobus Latomus regarding the relationship between Scripture and tradition(s), the duty of prelates as pastors (François and Gielis), next to the earlier reception of Gerson’s 'Monotessaron' by Peter de Rivo (Friedman, François and Masolini). Apart from Matusevich's work in Leuven libraries and contacts with individual researchers, she intends to co-organize a Lectio round table, which may reveal new ties between Gerson and early modern authors in Leuven and elsewhere. As an outcome, she plans to write an overview article and a more elaborated study, which will be published, as part of her future book on Gerson’s legacy, with a major European publisher.
