Based on the Dutch 2008 publication, 'Terminologie van het tolken', and with the express consent of the original compilers, Heidi Salaets, Winibert Segers and Henry Bloemen, 'Interpreting terminology' is a reference work specifically intended for the South African user. No less than 168 terms on the theory and practice of interpreting are included in five languages in this dictionary: English, Dutch, Afrikaans, Northern Sotho and Zulu. Terms in the original 2008 publication that are not relevant in a local context have been omitted from 'Interpreting terminology'. Definitions of interpreting terms that are used differently in South Africa than in Europe have been localised. In addition, terms that are frequently used locally, but that do not appear in the Dutch publication, have been added. Each term is clearly defined in English, Dutch and Afrikaans, and supplemented with comments, examples, antonyms, synonyms and cross-references where possible or required. Translation equivalents in Northern Sotho and Zulu are provided. One of the primary goals of this reference work is to bridge the gap between training and the workplace. Those who want to communicate clearly and accurately about interpreting will find this publication useful. Moreover, this publication represents an ongoing attempt to contribute to the development and standardisation of interpreting terminology in Northern Sotho and Zulu. Expert teams in both these languages were involved in this project. The compilers are both lecturers responsible for the training of language practitioners, including interpreters, at the University of Johannesburg.
