The TermWise Knowledge Platform: An efficient translation and terminology management suite for legal translation in Belgium

This papers outlines the TermWise Knowledge Platform, a state-funded, multidisciplinary Research & Development project, involving (applied)linguists, computer scientists and end-users, and aimed at developing a Translation Management System for the Belgian legal domain. It is scheduled to run from October 2009 to September 2013. The paper firstly investigates how terminology management has been carried out in the translation departments of the Federal Public Service of Justice in Belgium. Based on this survey, the paper proposes a new TMS tool which is expected to assist the translators and revisers through their translation assignments. In the presentation of the tool, the paper first outlines the requirements that the tool should adhere to according to established ISO requirement. Next, the knowledge acquisition steps to extract a bilingual terminological knowledge base from corpora is discussed. These steps include Term Extraction, Bilingual Alignment and Concept Modelling and will be integrated in a common statistical datamining framework. Finally, the paper outlines the user interface that will make the terminological knowledge base accessible to end users in the form of a collaborative cloud-based application.
