Colloidal dispersions in shear flow

Book Contribution - Chapter

© 2016 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. All rights reserved. This chapter explains a flavor of the complexity of sheared colloidal dispersions. It first describes the equilibrium phase behavior and shows how this phase behavior is affected by shear flow. The chapter then discusses how the nonequilibrium phase behavior perturbs the flow behavior of the system including flow instabilities. The effect of shear flow on the crystallization of colloidal spheres is discussed. The chapter also describes the effect of shear flow on demixing systems and shows how this affects the stability of the system. It considers gas-liquid phase separating systems in shear flow, where both phases dynamically behave the same. The chapter further explores how the isotropic-nematic phase transition is influenced by shear flow. Finally, it explains how the nonequilibrium spinodal lines can be calculated using the same approach, but now including the effect of shear flow on the orientation of the rods.
