The draining fistula: Rare complication after carotid endarterectomy

Journal Contribution - Journal Article

A carotid endarterectomy is a common procedure with, however, a significant morbidity and even mortality. Fortunately, infectious complications remain rare, with an estimated prevalence of less than 1%. Still, it is important to be aware of their existence and presenting symptoms. The medical history of a 84-year-old lady is reported and the literature on infectious complications after a carotid endarterectomy with a Dacron patch, is reviewed. Even though such complications are rare, multiple treatment options are available. A successful revision with the replacement of the infected foreign body by means of a venous patch is described.
