IPSU 2022: Digital Ius Knowledge Empowerment (BRGCON36)

In the age of big data and predictive analytics, one wonders to what extent the information gathered could be used for the common
good, preserving the rule of law and human rights. The Digital Ius Knowledge Empowerment (DIKE) Project focuses on utilising
digitalisation of courts’ decisions in order to support citizens’ empowerment through human-centred predictive justice, in civil and
commercial disputes.
Our aim is to develop a method that will attain harmonization of procedures through predictive algorithms. In particular, we will
combine a solid legal analysis with broad text mining techniques to create a support decision system to suggest the reasonable
outcome of a civil litigation.
To pursue such a goal, the project will adopt a legal design approach. Legal design is an area of research and practice that applies
human-centred design to the world of law to make the latter more accessible and usable to all. Its method consists in building a
solution around the user, identifying, responding, and anticipating their needs during the cycle of development and beyond. The
user-centric approach, the co-creation process with all the relevant stakeholders, the testing and iteration will make sure that the AI
solution is accepted and trusted.
Embracing a combination of theoretical and practical driven approaches, the DIKE project will:
Develop an open-source distributed software that integrates human-machine interaction through the life-cycle of an AI system
(solution explorer)
Ensure acceptance, transparency, traceability, and fairness of AI through an annotation framework
Guarantee explainability and generate interpretable predictive models based on court rulings through a knowledge-based approach.
Provide an AI-supported digital experience for citizens (digital journey)
This may increase equality because such prediction can reduce information asymmetry between unequal parties and can nudge them
towards settlement instead of taking the route of costly court proceedings
