Investigation of tunable buffer layers for coated superconductors : from solid state physics to quantum chemistry Universiteit Gent
Advancing predictions of protein stability in the solid state KU Leuven
The β-relaxation associated with the sub-glass transition temperature (Tg,β) is attributed to fast, localised molecular motions which can occur below the primary glass transition temperature (Tg,α). Consistent with Tg,β being observed well-below storage temperatures, the β-relaxation associated motions have been hypothesised to influence protein stability in the solid state and could thus impact the quality of e.g. protein powders for inhalation ...

Towards Bridging the Gap between Life and Physics. Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Examination of the scale properties of living organisms and the electronic configuration of crystalline structures suggests that related modeling may be used for both. This paper comments on individual and common properties of the two systems and draws a comparison between them. Both exhibit multiple 'scales' separated by complex or forbidden regions and a global 'overview' of their scale properties. We conclude that the analogy may provide a ...

EFOMP policy statement 16: The role and competences of medical physicists and medical physics experts under 2013/59/EURATOM KU Leuven
On 5 December 2013 the European Council promulgated Directive 2013/59/EURATOM. This Directive is important for Medical Physicists and Medical Physics Experts as it puts the profession on solid foundations and describes it more comprehensively. Much commentary regarding the role and competences has been developed in the context of the European Commission project "European Guidelines on the Medical Physics Expert" published as Radiation Protection ...
The Institute for Nuclear and Radiation Physics at the University of Leuven KU Leuven
Last year some two hundred present and former collaborators came to Leuven to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Instituut voor Kern- en Stralingsfysica (IKS; Institute for Nuclear and Radiation Physics). The institute originated in the slipstream of the separation of the Catholic University of Leuven into two parts: the Flemish KU Leuven, remaining in the city of Leuven and the French Université Catholique de Louvain, situated in the ...
Chemistry and plasma physics challenges for 2D materials technology KU Leuven
Transition-metal dichalcogenides such as MoS2 or WS2 are semiconducting materials with a layered structure. One single layer consists of a plane of metal atoms terminated on the top and bottom by the chalcogen atoms sulfur, selenium, or tellurium. These layers show strong in-plane covalent bonding, whereas the Van-der-Waals bonds in between adjacent layers are weak. Those weak bonds allow the microcleavage and extraction of a monolayer. ...
