Clubbing seals: Exploring the ecosystem of third-party security seals KU Leuven
In the current web of distrust, malware, and server compromises, convincing an online consumer that a website is secure, can make the difference between a visitor and a buyer. Third-party security seals position themselves as a solution to this problem, where a trusted external company vouches for the security of a website, and communicates it to visitors through a security seal which the certified website can embed in its pages. In this paper, ...
Hearing thresholds of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) for playbacks of seal scarer signals, and effects of the signals on behavior KU Leuven
© 2014, Springer International Publishing Switzerland. Acoustic mitigation devices (AMDs) are used to deter marine mammals from construction sites to prevent hearing injury by offshore pile-driving noise. In order to quantify the distance at which AMDs designed as ‘seal scarers’ are detected by seals, the 50% hearing thresholds for playbacks of their sounds were determined. The broadband hearing threshold sound pressure levels (SPLs) of two ...
It's all relative: the expression of identity through Old Babylonian seals from Sippar based on the reconstruction of fourteen families and their seal use Universiteit Gent
The role of glial cells in sALS and C9orf72 HRE-mediated ALS KU Leuven
The aim of this research project is to further study neuroinflammation in ALS in the different clinical and genetic subtypes of the disease and to map changes in composition of the different subpopulations of white blood cells and cytokines in the blood of ALS patients. The changes found will be correlated with the existing biomarkers and with known prognostic factors of the disease.
Raman and quantitative-phase microscope with counter-propagating beams demonstrated on HeLa cells Universiteit Gent
Raman spectroscopy probes the chemical composition of biological samples with sub-micron resolution, rendering it a powerful tool in the diagnosis of several diseases and the study unstained biological samples. However, the weak Raman signal leads to long acquisition times, unsuited to study dynamical processes or large samples. Quantitative phase microscopy can speed up the diagnosis, provide complementary data, and potentially link the Raman ...
Oxidized alginate beads for tunable release of osteogenically potent mesenchymal stromal cells Universiteit Gent
Recombinant Escherichia coli cells immobilized in Ca-alginate beads for metabolite production Universiteit Antwerpen
Milligram amounts of metabolites of drug candidates arc required to identify toxic products. Human drug metabolites are currently produced selectively in a time- and cost-efficient manner in bioreactor systems containing recombinant Escherichia coli co-expressing a human cytochrome P450 isoenzyme/NADPH cytochrome P450 reductase (hCYP/HR) complex. For further optimization, immobilization of the catalytic system in Ca-alginate microbeads was ...
