How does PI-RADS v2.1 impact patient classification? A head-to-head comparison between PI-RADS v2.0 and v2.1 Universiteit Gent
Coffee C21 and protection of DNA from strand breaks : evaluation of a health claim pursuant to Article 13(5) of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 Universiteit Gent
Following an application from Tchibo GmbH submitted for authorisation of a health claim pursuant to Article 13(5) of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 via the Competent Authority of Germany, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) was asked to deliver an opinion on the scientific substantiation of a health claim related to Coffee C21 and protection of DNA from strand breaks. The scope of the application was proposed to fall ...
Total hip replacement for acetabular fractures Results in 121 patients operated between 1983 and 2003 KU Leuven
Total hip replacement has an important role in the treatment of acetabular fractures. Immediate total hip arthroplasty is only indicated for some rare cases but late reconstruction is performed more frequently and may follow failed non-operative or operative treatment of the original acetabular fracture.
Determination of mercury in river water by diffusive gradients in thin films using P81 membrane as binding layer Vrije Universiteit Brussel
In this work, a device based on diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) was evaluated for the determination of Hg(II) in river water. The DGT device was assembled with a cellulose phosphate ion exchange membrane (P81 Whatman) as a binding phase and agarose gel 1.5% (m/v) as a diffusive layer. Laboratory deployments showed that the binding of Hg(2+) ([Hg(DGT)]/[Hg(solution)]) by P81 membrane was more effective (97%) than the Chelex 100 resin ...
Loss of 9p21 regulatory hub promotes kidney cancer progression by upregulating HOXB13. KU Leuven
Loss of chromosome 9p21 is observed in one-thirds of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) and associated with poorer patient survival. Unexpectedly, 9p21 loss-of-heterozygosity (LOH) does not lead to decreased expression of the 9p21 tumor suppressor genes, CDKN2A and CDKN2B, suggesting alternative mechanisms of 9p-mediated tumorigenesis. Concordantly, CRISPR-mediated 9p21 deletion promotes growth of immortalized human embryonic kidney ...
Differential regulation of PKD isoforms in oxidative stress conditions through phosphorylation of a conserved Tyr in the P+1 loop KU Leuven
Protein kinases are essential molecules in life and their crucial function requires tight regulation. Many kinases are regulated via phosphorylation within their activation loop. This loop is embedded in the activation segment, which additionally contains the Mg2+ binding loop and a P+1 loop that is important in substrate binding. In this report, we identify Abl-mediated phosphorylation of a highly conserved Tyr residue in the P+1 loop of ...
A variant at chromosome 9p21 is associated with recurrent myocardial infarction and cardiac death after acute coronary syndrome: The GRACE Genetics Study KU Leuven Universiteit Gent
AIMS: Recent genetic studies identified the rs1333049 variant on chromosome 9p21 as a major susceptibility locus for coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction (MI). Here, we evaluated whether this variant also contributes to recurrent MI or cardiac death following an acute coronary syndrome (ACS). METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 3247 patients with ACS enrolled in the Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE) in three distinct ...
Chromosome 9p21 Polymorphism Interacts With Waist-to-Hip Ratio in Carotid Plaque Universiteit Gent
Background: A gene-environment interaction has been suggested between a chromosome 9p21 polymorphism, which confers a major risk for cardiovascular disease, and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). We further characterized this interaction for carotid atherosclerosis in the larger population-based Asklepios study. Methods and Results: We genotyped the rs1333049 polymorphism on chromosome 9p21 in 2,481 healthy individuals aged 35 to 55 years, in which ...
