Unrotating images in laparoscopy with an application for 30° laparoscopes KU Leuven
In laparoscopic surgery, 30 degree laparoscopes are used to improve the viewing range by rotating the scope, effectively changing the viewing direction. In this case, the camera has to be kept fixed so that the captured video does not rotate as well. As both the surgeon and the assistant use both their hands during surgery, this means that one of them has to interrupt his task in order to rotate the scope against the camera. We propose a method ...

Distinguishing epidemiological dependent from treatment (resistance) dependent HIV mutations: problem statement KU Leuven
HIV is a rapidly evolving virus leading to AIDS, a disease responsible for an estimated 2 million deaths in 2007. For optimal guidance of a patient's therapy and for the design of more effective drugs, it is important to understand how the virus becomes resistant to the current drugs and how this understanding can be used to predict therapy response. However, it is difficult to make a distinction between mutations that are inherited through ...
Formulation of fast disintegrating tablets of ternary solid dispersions consisting of TPGS 1000 and HPMC 2910 or PVPVA 64 to improve the dissolution of the anti-HIV drug UC 781 KU Leuven
Solid dispersion formulations made up of d-alpha-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol succinate 1000 (TPGS 1000) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone co-vinyl acetate 64 (PVPVA 64) or hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose 2910 (HPMC 2910) were developed in order to improve the dissolution of UC 781. UC 781 dissolution rate was markedly improved as compared to the physical mixtures and the pure drug, attaining maximum drug releases of up to 100% after only 5 min in the ...

A basic model for evaluating a direct battery and supercapacitor parallel connection Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Ongoing research regarding the long-time effect of a supercapacitor-battery parallel connected system as compared to a battery only system, proved the usefulness of a model for such systems. The model, as created, enables evaluation of the direct response to a current load and as a consequence the dimensioning of the supercapacitors. The model does not predict the long term effect on the batteries in such a combination.
