Subjective well-being as a mediator for curiosity and depression Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Curiosity is a personality trait that is inversely related to depression and positively related to subjective well- being. However, the relationship between curiosity and these two outcomes is still unclear which hampers our general understanding of well-being. Based on research within positive psychology that showed character strengths such as curiosity can indirectly decrease depression, we hypothesized that the inverse relationship between ...
Nuanced aesthetic emotions: Emotion differentiation is related to knowledge of the arts and curiosity. KU Leuven
The ability to distinguish between emotions is considered indicative of well-being, but does emotion differentiation (ED) in an aesthetic context also reflect deeper and more knowledgeable aesthetic experiences? Here we examine whether positive and negative ED in response to artistic stimuli reflects higher fluency in an aesthetic domain. Particularly, we test whether knowledge of the arts and curiosity are associated with more fine-grained ...
Follow your curiosity, you wonU+2019t regret it : how disconfirmed expectations will not always result in dissatisfaction Universiteit Gent
The present paper shows that higher curiosity levels are related with higher expectations regarding the product and more negative disconfirmation between expectations and performance of the product. However, satisfying curiosity leads to pleasure so that this negative disconfirmation does not lead to dissatisfaction or regret after product trial.
Addressing Self-Injury in Schools, Part 1: Understanding Nonsuicidal Self-Injury and the Importance of Respectful Curiosity in Supporting Youth Who Engage in Self-Injury Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is defined as the deliberate, self-inflicted damage of body tissue without suicidal intent and for purposes not socially or culturally sanctioned. School nurses are often a first point of contact for young people experiencing mental health challenges, and yet they often report they lack knowledge and training to provide care for persons who engage in NSSI. In the first of two parts, this article provides school ...
Curiosity, surveillance and detection in Charlotte Bronte's villette Universiteit Gent
The article offers a contextualization of female curiosity by relating it to different characters who, in the course of Villette, adopt a criminal, sexual and clinical gaze and use it as a tool to make sense both of gendered and normative reality; I will discuss their self-fashioning in the light of - and as a response to - the constraints of the strictly patrolled and inquisitive patriarchal and religious community at the Pensionnat and in ...
Chronic Kidney Disease After Partial Nephrectomy in Patients With Preoperative Inconspicuous Renal Function - Curiosity or Relevant Issue? KU Leuven
BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a severe long-term complication after partial nephrectomy (PN). Clinical and scientific focus lies on patients with impaired renal function at the time of surgery. Little data is available on patients with normal preoperative renal function (NPRF). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent PN with a preoperative estimated glomular filtration rate > 60 mL/min/1.73m2 were retrospectively examined ...
First order plus frequency dependent delay modeling : new perspective or mathematical curiosity? Universiteit Gent
The first-order-plus-dead-time model (FOPDT) is a popular simplified representation of higher order dynamics. However, a well known drawback is the rapid decrease of the frequency response accuracy with increasing process order. This especially applies to the higher frequency range. Literature offers solutions by extending this three parameter model with more parameters. Here, a fractional dead time is proposed. As such, a Frequency-Dependent ...
