Convulsions and apnoea in a patient infected with New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-1 Escherichia coli treated with colistin Vrije Universiteit Brussel
We present a patient with severe New Delhi metallo-ß-lactamase-1 Escherichia coli infection who developed convulsions rapidly followed by acute respiratory muscle weakness and apnoea during ...
Continuous renal replacement therapy-related strategies to avoid colistin toxicity Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Polymyxins are 'old' antimicrobials which were abandoned for almost 30 years because of significant renal and neurological toxicity. However, the alarming rise in multiresistant Gram-negative bacterial infections worldwide has revived interest in these 'forgotten' agents. Colistin (polymyxin E) is one of the main antibiotics of this class. It is most often administered as the prodrug colistimethate sodium. Doses for treatment of systemic ...
Plasmid-mediated mcr-1 colistin resistance in Escherichia coli from a black kite in Russia Vrije Universiteit Brussel
The gene mcr-1 conferring resistance to last-line antibiotic colistin has been reported globally. Here, we describe the first detection of plasmid-mediated colistin resistance in Russian wildlife, an isolate of Escherichia coli sequence type 2280 from a black kite (Milvus migrans) scavenging raptor. Whole-genome sequencing and plasmid transferability experiments revealed that mcr-1.1 was located on conjugative IncI2 plasmid pDR164 (59891 bp). ...
