The distribution of amphibians and reptiles on Samos Island (Greece) (Amphibia: Reptilia) Instituut voor Natuur- en Bosonderzoek
A collection of 1580 recent data records (1993-2012) of amphibians and reptiles from the Greek island of Samos was compiled. All records were mapped onto a grid of 1 km by 1 km, with 261 of the total 648 cells (40 %) of the island holding at least one observation. Subsequently, the distribution patterns and ecological observations were compared with data from other islands in the Aegean Basin. The discovery of the Coin-marked Snake Hemorrhois ...
Recurrent functional divergence of early tetrapod keratins in amphibian toe pads and mammalian hair Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Amphibians have invaded arboreal habitats multiple times independently during their evolution. Adaptation to these habitats was nearly always accompanied by the presence or appearance of toe pads, flattened enlarge- ments on tips of fingers and toes that provide adhesive power in these environments. The strength and elasticity of the toe pad relies on polygonal arrayed cells ending in nanoscale projections, which are densely packed with ...

Ultraviolet radiation and Vitamin D-3 in amphibian health, behaviour, diet and conservation Koninklijke Maatschappij voor Dierkunde van Antwerpen
Amphibians are currently suffering a period of mass extinction with approximately 20% of species under severe threat and more than 120 species already extinct. In light of this crisis there is an urgency to establish viable ex situ populations and also find the causes of in situ declines. The role of ultraviolet radiation and Vitamin D-3 in amphibian health directly influences both ex situ and in situ populations. Vitamin D-3 can be ...
The chains of the heterodimeric amphibian skin antimicrobial peptide, distinctin, are encoded by separate messenger RNAs Universiteit Hasselt
Using a primer to a conserved nucleotide sequence of previously cloned skin peptides of Phyllomedusa species, two distinct cDNAs were "shotgun" cloned from a skin secretion-derived cDNA library of the frog, Phyllomedusa burmeisteri. The two ORFs separately encode chains A and B of an analog of the previously reported heterodimeric peptide, distinctin. LC-MS/MS analysis of native versus dithiotreitol reduced crude venom, confirmed the predicted ...
