Phase separation and Remixing in Polymer Blends and Solutions - from bulk to thin films Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Phase separation and remixing are important transformations in the processing and application of polymer blends and polymer solutions. Modulated temperature DSC (MTDSC) proves to be very valuable for studying phase separation and remixing, for determining whether the systems are homogeneous or heterogeneous (from the glass transition(s)), to get an idea of the phase compositions, and for building phase or state diagrams and determining demixing ...
Phase behavior of PCBM blends with different conjugated polymers Vrije Universiteit Brussel
In this work the phase behavior of [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) blends with different poly(phenylene vinylene) (PPV) samples is investigated by means of standard and modulated temperature differential scanning calorimetry (DSC and MTDSC) and rapid heat-cool calorimetry (RHC). The PPV conjugated polymers include poly(2-methoxy-5-(3?,7?-dimethyloctyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (MDMO-PPV), High Tg-PPV which is a copolymer, and ...
NMR study of the nanomorphology in thin films of polymer blends used in organic PV devices: MDMO-PPV/PCBM Universiteit Hasselt
The disclosure of the nanomorphology of thin films in organic solar cells, prepared from blends of conjugated polymers and PCBM, is of key importance for a better understanding of the occurring photovoltaic (PV) mechanisms. Hereto solid-state NMR relaxometry has been evaluated as a complementary technique to traditional microscopic techniques like atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. It is demonstrated that proton ...
Morphology, rheology and crystallization in relation to the viscosity ratio of Polystyrene/Polypropylene polymer blends Universiteit Hasselt
Microfibrillar and droplet morphology of polypropylene (PP) phase dispersed in polypropylene (PS) was fabricated by using melt-extrusion. This morphology was obtained by introducing isotactic PP (20 wt.%) with different viscosity in the PS matrix (80 wt.%). Furthermore, the rheological properties of the blend investigated as a function of the viscosity ratio K. The variations in blend morphology were related to crystallization, melting ...
Construction of the state diagram of polymer blend thin films using differential AC chip calorimetry Vrije Universiteit Brussel
The phase separation behavior of polymer blend thin films of 100 to 150 nm was studied using differential AC Chip calorimetry. By taking advantage of the low sensor and sample mass inherent to chip calorimetry, a new methodology based on temperature jumps was developed. This methodology allowed the construction of the state diagram of polymer blend thin films as evidenced for two model systems (PVME/PS and PVME/Phenoxy) displaying a lower ...
Phase separation in polymer blend thin films studied by differential AC chip calorimetry Vrije Universiteit Brussel
AC chip calorimetry is used to study the phase separation behavior of 100 nm thin poly(vinyl methyl ether)/poly(styrene) (PVME/PS) blend films. Using the on-chip heaters, very short (10 MS-10 S) temperature jumps into the temperature window of phase separation are applied, simulating laser heating induced patterning. These temperature pulses produce a measurable shift in the glass transition temperature, evidencing phase separation. The effect ...
Crystallization, micro- and nano-structure, and melting behavior of polymer blends KU Leuven
© Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 2014. All rights reserved. When the melt of a crystalline polymer is cooled to a temperature between the glass transition and the equilibrium melting point, the thermodynamic requirement for crystallization is fulfilled. In a crystallizable miscible blend, however, the presence of an amorphous component, either thermoplastic or thermosetting, can either increase or decrease the tendency to crystallize ...
