Comprehending the New World in the Early Modern Period: descriptions of Dutch Brazil (1624-1654) Universiteit Gent
The dissertation deals with the textual legacy of Dutch Brazil in four 17th-century Dutch publications. The chosen descriptions not only demonstrate the Dutch impact on Brazil, but were in their turn products of a particular Dutch approach whereby the colony was appropriated and understood through descriptions, or what will be referred to as the comprehension of Dutch Brazil.
Dignity and Cessio Bonorum in Early-Modern Dutch Learned Legal Literature KU Leuven
Imprisonment for debt was a common sanction in the early modern period. Through the learned legal institute of the cessio bonorum, or its customary legal alternatives, insolvent debtors could avoid the shame of prison. Nevertheless, in order to discourage irresponsible administration of one's patrimony, local customs and princely ordinances often added shaming sanctions to the ius commune institute. This contribution first presents the legal ...

Rods, sets and arrows. The rise and fall of modern mathematics in Belgium KU Leuven
The introduction of modern mathematics in Belgian secondary schools in September 1968 was one of the most radical education reforms that the country has ever seen. From the very start, the reform was controversial among mathematicians and mathematics educators, and until now, it continues to be considered as either a wonderful experiment or a dramatic failure. This monograph is the first attempt to present a comprehensive overview of the reform ...
Innovating Financial Law in Early Modern Europe: Transfers of Commercial Paper and Recourse Liability in Legislation and Ius Commune (Sixteenth to Eighteenth Centuries) Vrije Universiteit Brussel
In this contribution it is demonstrated how in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Dutch rules concerning negotiable credit instruments (i.e., bills obligatory to bearer and bills of exchange) transformed financial law throughout the European continent. The Antwerp and Amsterdam authorities devised precepts of law on such issues that went against substantial principles of the academic ius commune. In the course of the seventeenth century, ...
Myths of language decadence in Dutch history Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Contrary to the fixed language norms of Northern (“Hollandic”) Dutch, Southern (“Flemish”) Dutch in the eighteenth and nineteenth century is claimed to have been nothing more than a collection of mutually unintelligible and Frenchified dialects. Such discourses of Southern linguistic chaos lie at the basis of Hollandic varieties serving as the foundation for the modern-day standard language. In this contribution, I will identify and trace back ...
The interplay of language norms and usage patterns. Comparing the history of Dutch, English, French and German Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Historical sociolinguistics has come a long way. Inspired by the empirical approach to spoken language in modern sociolinguistic research, authors such as Romaine (1982) and Milroy (1992) felt the need to apply sociolinguistic research methods to language history. It became important to create reliable databases comprising source materials that were suitable for sociolinguistic investigation. In the absence of spoken language data, the most ...
