Application of GISH to characterize woody ornamental hybrids with small genomes and chromosomes Instituut voor Landbouw-, Visserij- en Voedingsonderzoek Universiteit Gent
P>Genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) is a powerful tool in distinguishing parental genomes in plant hybrids. However, in plants with small genome GISH often failed to decorate entire chromosomes. In this study, the GISH technology was adapted for woody ornamentals, commonly characterized by small genomes (between 842.8 and 2430.4 Mbp/1C or 0.86 and 2.48 pg/1C) and/or high amounts of small chromosomes (up to 82 chromosomes with size 1.4-4.8 ...
Evidence for the occurrence of unreduced gametes in interspecific hybrids of Hibiscus Instituut voor Landbouw-, Visserij- en Voedingsonderzoek
Interspecific crosses within Hibiscus resulted in F1 and F2 (self-pollination of F1) progeny of H. syriacus x H. paramutabilis. Of these populations seven F1 and five F2 hybrids were analysed for the occurrence of unreduced gametes. Pollen from H. syriacus, H. paramutabilis, and the F1 and F2 hybrids had diameters between 80 - 230 µm. However, two of the F2 hybrids tested also had a few pollen (<#1%) with a diameter of 250 µm. Flow cytometry ...
In vitro somatic embryogenesis and plant regeneration in Zantedeschia hybrids Instituut voor Landbouw-, Visserij- en Voedingsonderzoek
A method for regeneration of plants from tuber explants of a Zantedeschia hybrid via somatic embryogenesis was developed. In vitro cultures were initiated starting from both anthers and tubers. Somatic embryogenesis was only achieved from tuber explants. 6-Benzyladenine (BA) at 0.6 or 2 mg l(-1) in combination with 2 mg l(-1) alpha-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) yielded the highest number of embryos per explant. The somatic embryos converted into ...

Natural Leishmania donovani/Leishmania aethiopica hybrids identified from Ethiopia Instituut voor Tropische Geneeskunde
Natural hybridization events have been demonstrated between closely and distantly related Leishmania groups despite a predominantly clonal and endogamically sexual mode of reproduction. Here we report the first natural hybrid between Leishmania aethiopica and Leishmania donovani, as evidenced from the analysis of several clones from strain MHOM/ET/94/ABAUY. Targeted species-identification PCRs revealed the presence of both genotypes, and ...
In vitro promastigote fitness of putative Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis / Leishmania (Viannia) peruviana hybrids Instituut voor Tropische Geneeskunde
Analysis of hybrid rechargeable energy storage systems in Series Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles based on simulations Vrije Universiteit Brussel
In this paper, an extended analysis of the performance of different hybrid Rechargeable Energy Storage Systems (RESS) for use in Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) with a series drivetrain topology is analyzed, based on simulations with three different driving cycles. The investigated hy-brid energy storage topologies are an energy optimized lithium-ion battery (HE) in combination with an Electrical Double-Layer Capacitor (EDLC) system, in ...
An Evaluation Study of Hybrid Energy Storage System for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Buses Vrije Universiteit Brussel
This paper reviews different configurations of the hybrid-energy-storage-system (HESS), a combination of a Li-ion Battery (LiB) pack, a Li-ion capacitor (LiC) bank, and DC-DC converters, for Plug-in hybrid electric (PHE) buses. A new HESS configuration is proposed to improve the efficiency of power transfer from battery and to reduce the voltage rating of LiC bank associated the cell balancing problem. The simulation results with a standard SORT ...
Understanding Interface Interactions in Graphene-Ruthenium Hybrids for Next Generation Interconnects KU Leuven
With every technology generation, the modern IC continues to shrink to accommodate a higher packing density of devices. For 5 nm node, the critical load interconnects would have metal pitch as low as 28 nm. This is much smaller than the mean free path of electrons in Cu resulting in a dramatic and nonlinear rise in interconnect resistance. Moreover, the drop in the metal pitch distances and scaling of oxides increase the capacitance of the BEOL. ...
