Prospective multicenter comparison of urine culture with PCR on dried blood spots using 2 different extraction and PCR methods in neonates suspected for congenital cytomegalovirus infection Instituut voor Tropische Geneeskunde KU Leuven Universiteit Gent Universiteit Antwerpen
To evaluate the potential of dried blood spots (DBS) as a congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) testing specimen, the laboratory diagnostic accuracy of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on DBS was compared to viral urine cultures from neonates suspected for cCMV. Two different extraction methods (EasyMAG, bioMerieux versus Qiagen) and 2 real-time PCR protocols (in-house versus Argene) were compared. We were able to collect both DBS and urine ...
Course of adverse events during short treatment regimen in patients with rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis in Burundi Instituut voor Tropische Geneeskunde
The introduction of the nine-month short-treatment regimen (STR) has drastically improved outcomes of rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (RR-TB) treatment. Adverse events (AE) commonly occur, including injectable-induced hearing loss. In Burundi we retrospectively assessed the frequency of adverse events and treatment modifications in all patients who initiated the STR between 2013-2017. Among 225 included patients, 93% were successfully ...
World Health Organization 2018 treatment guidelines for rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis: uncertainty, potential risks and the way forward Instituut voor Tropische Geneeskunde
The 2018 World Health Organization (WHO) treatment guidelines for multidrug-/rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (MDR/RR-TB) give preference to all-oral long regimens lasting for 18-20 months. The guidelines strongly recommend combining bedaquiline, levofloxacin (or moxifloxacin) and linezolid, supplemented by cycloserine and/or clofazimine. The effectiveness of this combination in a long regimen has not been tested in any study to date, with ...
