Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is the most common inherited disorder of the peripheral nervous system. Mutations in the 27-kDa small heat-shock protein gene (HSPB1) cause axonal CMT or distal hereditary motor neuropathy (distal HMN).
