Hydration of blended cement with high volume iron-rich slag from non-ferrous metallurgy Universiteit Gent KU Leuven
The hydration of blended cements with up to 70 wt% iron-rich slag was investigated. Isothermal calorimetry revealed a retarding effect of the slag on Portland cement hydration during the first day, while from 2 days onwards the reaction extent of C3S, C(3)A and C(4)AF increased. The slag reacted to 20-30% after 150 days resulting in AFm phases, as well as a new phase with a layered double hydroxide structure with (Mg + Fe)/Al around 3. Fe was ...

Crack control in textile reinforced cement Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Reinforcing a cement with a continuous structure of fibres (called textile reinforced cement) can lead to increased toughness and enhanced tensile strength of the composite. This is obtained through the initiation of multiple cracks within the matrix, and stress transfer between matrix and fibres. Amongst the proposed micromechanical models, the Stochastic Cracking Model is distinguished by a Weibull distribution function for matrix tensile ...
Effect of curing conditions on the dimensional and thermal stability of calcium phosphate cement for elevated temperature applications Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) are attractive materials for elevated temperature applications, like moulds to process thermoplastics up to 300 °C. The CPC resulting from the reaction of wollastonite with phosphoric acid cured at room temperature however contains hydrated phases like brushite, and is thus not stable when exposed to temperatures above 200 °C. A non-contact method based on digital image correlation demonstrated that isothermal ...
Dendritic Glycopolymer as Drug Delivery System for Proteasome Inhibitor Bortezomib in a Calcium Phosphate Bone Cement Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Establishment of drug delivery system (DDS) in bone substitute materials for local treatment of bone defects still requires ambitious solutions for a retarded drug release. We present two novel DDS, a weakly cationic dendritic glycopolymer and a cationic polyelectrolyte complex, composed of dendritic glycopolymer and cellulose sulfate, for the proteasome inhibitor bortezomib. Both DDS are able to induce short-term retarded release of ...
