Ionosporus: a new genus for Boletus longipes (Boletaceae), with a new species, I. australis, from Australia Plantentuin Meise / Agentschap Plantentuin Meise
Boletus longipes was described in 1909 by George Massee from a specimen collected in Singapore. The species was not mentioned again until E.J.H. Corner’s book in 1972 on Malaysian boletes. Corner had collected it many times during his tenure in Singapore, and he synonymized Boletus tristis with B. longipes described nine years after B. longipes by Patouillard and Baker from the same site. Among the distinguishing characters of B. longipes were ...

From Austria to Australia. Three Lutheran Churches by Karl Langer. KU Leuven
In 1939, the young architect Karl Langer fled his native Vienna and installed himself in Brisbane, soon to become a central figure in the local architectural scene. Amongst his many architectural accomplishments, are several church buildings he designed for the Lutheran Church: St John’s in Bundaberg (1960), St John’s in Ipswich (1961) and St Peter’s College Chapel (1968) in Brisbane. These strikingly modern buildings supported the post-war ...
Penal diversity within Australia Vrije Universiteit Brussel
In this article, we start from internationally developed models explaining growing punitiveness and increasing imprisonment rates, to analyse the penal situation within Australia. While the eight Australian jurisdictions share many of the characteristics that have been identified as being important determinants of the size of the prison population, local features of these societies result in significant differences in punishment. The aim of the ...

Whole-genome sequencing confirms that Burkholderia pseudomallei multilocus sequence types common to both Cambodia and Australia are due to homoplasy Instituut voor Tropische Geneeskunde KU Leuven Universiteit Gent
Burkholderia pseudomallei isolates with shared multilocus sequence types (STs) have not been isolated from different continents. We identified two STs shared between Australia and Cambodia. Whole-genome analysis revealed substantial diversity within STs, correctly identified the Asian or Australian origin, and confirmed that these shared STs were due to homoplasy.
Fairy shrimps in distress: a molecular taxonomic review of the diverse fairy shrimp genus Branchinella (Anostraca: Thamnocephalidae) in Australia in the light of ongoing environmental change. Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Australia, and especially South-Western Australia, is a diversity hotspot for large branchiopod crustaceans. A significant proportion of this diversity is found in the anostracans (Crustacea, Anostraca) and particularly in the diverse genus Branchinella with at least 34 species. Members of this genus are found exclusively in temporary aquatic habitats which are increasingly threatened by secondary salinization and other anthropogenic pressures. ...
Statistical analysis of 40 years of preservative in-ground stake testing in Australia Universiteit Gent
Wood is widely recognized as a valuable material, yet the natural durability of some wood species limits its use for certain outdoor purposes. For decades, a wide range of methods and chemicals have been developed to increase the resistance of wood against degrading microorganisms and termites. Preservative treatment has a long and widespread tradition in wood protection. Proper testing of the effectiveness of such preservatives is based on both ...
