Energy Economics KU Leuven
What role for electric vehicles in the decarbonization of the car transport sector in Europe? KU Leuven
The transport sector is the only sector where carbon emissions continue to grow. This has led policy makers to propose ambitious policies to reduce emissions in the car sector, in particular carbon emissions standards, portfolio mandates for Electric Vehicles and purchase taxes or subsidies. We use a stylized two-period model for the car manufacturing sector to compare the cost efficiency of these policies. The model has gasoline fueled cars ...
An economic model of vehicle-to-grid: Impacts on the electricity market and consumer cost of electric vehicles KU Leuven
Higher battery storage capacity in electric vehicles (EV) implies less need for inconvenient recharging during long trips and increases the potential gains from vehicle-to-grid (V2G) electricity supply. We present an analytical model for the intertwinement of the consumers’ choice of battery capacity and the electricity market. We show that V2G increases the consumers’ choice of battery capacity, and it may reduce the cost of owning an EV ...
Competition in Congested Service Networks with Application to Air Traffic Control Provision in Europe KU Leuven
We analyze congested network-based markets and their impact on competition, equilibrium charges and efficiency. Several strategies are explored including price caps, mergers and investments in new technologies. We find that congested networks served by collaborating (serial) and competing (parallel) firms may lead to excessive prices. Addition- ally, oligopolists may only serve captive demand, leading to inefficiently low flows. Per- haps ...
