Enhanced contact flexibility from nanoparticles in capillary suspensions KU Leuven
HYPOTHESIS: Sample-spanning particle networks are used to induce structure and a yield stress, necessary for 3D printing of porous ceramics and paints. In capillary suspensions, a small quantity of immiscible secondary fluid is incorporated into a suspension. By further adding nanoparticles with a range of hydrophobicities, the structure of the bridges and microparticle-microparticle contacts is expected to be modified, resulting in a tunable ...
Involutive Yang-Baxter: cabling, decomposability, Dehornoy class Vrije Universiteit Brussel
We develop new machinery for producing decomposability tests for involutive solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. It is based on the seminal decomposability theorem of Rump, and on "cabling" operations on solutions and their effect on the diagonal map. Our machinery yields an elementary proof of a recent decomposability theorem of Camp-Mora and Sastriques, as well as original decomposability results. It also provides a conceptual interpretation ...
Data Protection Impact Assessment under the EU General Data Protection Regulation: A feminist reflection Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Can the Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) under Article 35 General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) address the power imbalances between those in control of information and the most vulnerable and marginalised persons to whom this information refers? Put another way, can DPIA be considered a feminist tool? Whilst data protection scholars and regulators consider DPIA a promising instrument for the protection of the fundamental rights ...
Modeling of Flexible Shaft for Robotics Applications Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Reducing moving mass and effective inertia is essential for achieving safe human-robot collaboration. This can be achieved either by employing remote actuation, which moves the mass of actuators away from the moving elements of the robot, or by elastic actuation, which decouples the inertia of the actuator from the inertia of the robot’s link. Flexible shafts, being torsionally compliant slender long shafts, offer a combination of remote and ...

Stability and bioaccessibility of micronutrients and phytochemicals present in processed leek and Brussels sprouts during static in vitro digestion Instituut voor Landbouw-, Visserij- en Voedingsonderzoek KU Leuven
Vegetables are frequently processed before consumption. However, vegetable functionalization continues beyond ingestion as the human digestive tract exposes vegetable products to various conditions (e.g. elevated temperature, pH alterations, enzymes, electrolytes, mechanical disintegration) which can affect the stability of micronutrients and phytochemicals. Besides the extent to which these compounds withstand the challenges posed by digestive ...
Founder populations of Stuckenia pectinata in restored ponds originate from genetically diverse propagule pool: A case study of urban ponds in Brussels, Belgium Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Eutrophication and cyanobacteria blooms are considered major problems for the biodiversity and water quality of urban ponds. While biomanipulation techniques such as drawdown with fish removal have great potential to restore turbid ponds to a clearwater status, it remains difficult to predict if and how macrophytes will recover naturally. Here, we used individual genotyping and population genetics based on 20 nuclear microsatellite loci to ...
