"Innovatief trainingsnetwerk: Immunoprofielgestuurde stratificatie van patiënten met de auto-immuunziekte trombotische trombocytopenische purpura" "Karen Vanhoorelbeke" "Chemie, Campus Kulak Kortrijk" "The PROFILE Innovative European Industrial Doctoral programme will develop improved tools for stratification of patients with the autoimmune disorder acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). Patient stratification is needed in order to further develop personalized medicine approaches for human disorders. Therefore, a detailed understanding of the disease at the molecular level is needed. Furthermore, implementation of a robust set of novel biomarkers is essential for stratification of patients. Also, highly flexible platforms to rapidly develop novel therapeutics are crucial to further boost the field of personalized medicine. The research program is embedded in a unique translational training program, which emphasizes clinical needs as a driving force for development of novel, innovative diagnostics and therapeutics (for personalized medicine). There is intersectoral knowledge transfer between academia and companies at the European level as 6 different EU Member states are involved in the network either as beneficiary or partner organization. The PROFILE network will allow 6 early stage researchers to follow this unique translational training. They will be trained in the clinic to identify clinical needs, in academia where they will contribute to a scientifically ambitious project and in the non-academic sector where they will be trained in a novel technologies and commercializing bioassays endowing them with an unique PROFILE for further advancing personalized medicine in Europe." "Systeemomics om de darm-nieras bij chronische nierziekte te ontrafelen." "Björn Meijers" "Onderzoeksgroep Nefrologie en Niertransplantatie" "System omics to unravel the gut-kidney axis in Chronic Kidney Disease:There is a great need for multi-disciplinary and methodologically well trained scientists in order to unravel complex diseases. Chronic kidney disease (CKD), which is more prevalent in women, and its high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) with nearly 50% of all deaths in CKD patients caused by CVD, is such a complex disease and its socio-economic burden is extremely high. STRATEGY-CKD will in this context focus on the gut-kidney axis and the role of the intestinal microbiome as important contributor to the genesis and evolution of CVD in CKD and as possible therapeutic target to improve outcome of CKD patients. For this purpose, 10 leading multidisciplinary academic and 3 industrial investigators and their teams will train young researchers in (1) excellent scientific skills, integrating technological skills [in vitro, bacterial and animals molecular and functional studies, state-of-the-art omic (cultur-, microbi, peptid-, prote-, metabolomics) approaches, bioinformatics, systems biology] in clinical/mechanistic knowledge to generate innovative insights triggering the pathogenesis and treatment of CKD related CVD; (2) Excellent complementary skills in personal and career development as well as business training required to extend beyond scientific research; and (3) exposure to both academic and non-academic environments, required to build bridges between researchers and entrepreneurs and support the future translation of research findings in innovative therapies and services.STRATEGY-CKD builds on already available advanced technology, models and patient samples, and established collaborations. STRATEGY-CKD links to ongoing European programs among partners of the consortium. STRATEGY-CKD will stimulate the development of young, broadly-trained scientists able to successfully link basic to clinical research in academia as well as in industry unravelling complex diseases such as CVD-CKD." "Onderzoek en innovatie Uitwisseling van personeel Netwerk van Europese data-wetenschappers" "Jochen De Weerdt" "Onderzoeksgroep Beleidsinformatica (LIRIS) (hoofdwerkadres Leuven)" "NeEDS responds to the massive scientific and technological challenges that the very rapidly growing field of Data Science has created for users and producers of data in Europe and world-wide. The challenges stem from the complexity of the data, the completely novel questions posed to data scientists, as well as the need of non-experts to visualize and interact with the knowledge extracted from data in order to aid data-driven decision-making. Companies and public sector bodies around Europe find they cannot build up the required capabilities quickly enough, and Europe is remarkably behind US academia in increasing Data Science capacity.NeEDS provides an integrated modelling and computing environment that facilitates data analysis and data visualization to enhance interaction. NeEDS brings together an excellent interdisciplinary research team that integrates expertise from three relevant academic disciplines, Mathematical Optimization, Visualization and Network Science, and is excellently placed to tackle the challenges.  NeEDS develops mathematical models, yielding results which are interpretable, easy-to-visualize, and flexible enough to incorporate user knowledge from complex data. These models require the numerical resolution of computationally demanding Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming formulations, and for this purpose NeEDS develops innovative mathematical optimization based heuristics.NeEDS consists of four academic beneficiaries, eight industrial beneficiaries (from industry sectors ranging from energy, retailing, insurance to banking, as well as national statistical offices), two academic partners and one industrial partner from five EU countries, USA and Latin America with strong and complementary expertise. With this composition, NeEDS is in a unique position to deliver cutting-edge multidisciplinary research to advance academic thinking on Data Science in Europe, and to improve the Data Science capabilities of industry and the public sector."
