Berckmans" "Bart Rabaey" "In deze bijdrage bespreken we het literaire oeuvre van de Vlaamse schrijver J.M.H. Berckmans (1953-2008) in het licht van de manisch-depressieve problematiek waar hij zijn hele leven mee geworsteld heeft. In een lacaniaanse benadering begrijpen we de talige aspecten van de manie als een betekenaarsvlucht, als een ontsporende metonymische verglijding van de betekenaarsketting. We beschouwen Berckmans’ oeuvre als de getuigenis van een volgehouden worsteling met het op hol slaan van de taal. Het is via het schrijven dat Berckmans een aantal strategieën ontwikkelt om deze taalontsporing tegen te gaan, enerzijds om de metonymische verglijding van de betekenaarsketting te temperen en anderzijds om een ervaring te bewerkstelligen van zich het subject en de auteur van zijn woorden te weten. Berckmans behandelt de taal via een meticuleus proces van schrijven en herschrijven, wat hij het ‘hakken’ en ‘kerven’ in de taal noemt. Tevens vindt er met het schrijven een proces van fictionalisering van zijn onmiddellijke leefwereld plaats, wat Berckmans bestempelt als de ‘grafie’ van zijn leven. Voorts bespreken we de opeenvolgende vormen van adressering doorheen zijn oeuvre: van de abstracte lezer, naar de secretaris-notulist, tot aan de bestemmeling van zijn brieven. We kunnen Berckmans’ schrijfarbeid als een sinthomatische uitvinding beschouwen, een kunstige, creatieve en hoogst singuliere oplossing voor de manische taalontregeling waaraan hij onderhevig was."
