METHOD: In a two-wave prospective study of 368 adolescents (age 13-17 years), Latent Change Modeling was used with Belgian adolescents' self-report measures. RESULTS: For mothers and fathers separately, adolescent self-criticism intervened in associations between achievement-oriented psychological control and adolescent depressive symptoms, at the level of both between-person differences and within-person changes. When investigating parents simultaneously, only maternal parenting was related directly and indirectly to adolescent depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Our results underscore the importance of personality-related vulnerability in associations between the parenting environment and symptoms of psychopathology during adolescent development." "The social context of early adolescents in the Global Early Adolescent Study" "Kristin Mmari, Diane Cooper, Caroline Moreau, Leah Koenig, Michelle Martinez, Eric Mafuta, Patrick Kayembe, Sara De Meyer, Kristien Michielsen, Chunyan Yu, Xiayun Zuo, Robert Wm. Blum" "Purpose: This paper used data from the Global Early Adolescent Study (GEAS) to provide a descriptive analysis of how early adolescents' social environments vary by sex across diverse cultural settings. Methods: The analyses were based on baseline data among 10-14-year old adolescents living in disadvantaged urban areas in seven sites: Kinshasa (DRC), Shanghai (China), Cuenca (Ecuador), Lampung, Semarang and Denpasar (Indonesia), and Flanders (Belgium). Except in Kinshasa where face-to face interviews were used, data were collected using self-administered surveys on mobile tablets. Social environments were measured by examining factors within five main domains, including the household and family, school, peers, neighborhoods, and the media. Site-specific descriptive analyses were performed, using Chi square tests and Student T-tests to identify sex-differences in each site. Results: The majority of early adolescents lived in two-parent households, perceived their parents/guardians cared and monitored them, had at least one friend, reported high educational aspirations, and perceived their neighborhoods as safe, socially cohesive, with a high level of social control. Yet, large gender and site differences were also observed. More girls reported same-sex friends and high levels of parental monitoring, while boys were more likely to have mixed-sex friends and spend greater amounts of time with friends. Adolescents in Kinshasa and Semarang watched the most TV per day, while higher proportions of adolescents in Flanders used social media on a daily basis. Significant gender differences in media use were also observed but varied according to site. Conclusions: Understanding how social contexts differ between boys and girls across sites has relevance for how we might examine gender attitude formations and subsequent health behaviors. Given the increased attention on the importance of early adolescence for shaping gender attitudes and norms, implementing approaches that consider the differences in boys' and girls' lives may hold the most promise for creating sustained and improve change. Genetic factors play an important role in the development of psychotic disorders. With increasing evidence, several rare copy number variants (cnvs) have been identified as risk factors. We describe a patient who had two psychotic episodes during his adolescence. In this patient, a 16p11.2 duplication was detected. This duplication is a recurrent cnv associated with various somatic and psychiatric phenotypes including psychosis and schizophrenia. The potential clinical relevance of this finding is discussed." "Parent-Adolescent Discrepancies Regarding Adolescents' Peer-Related Loneliness: Associations With Adolescent Adjustment" "Annette Spithoven, Janne Vanhalst, Patricia Bijttebier, Luc Goossens" "Because loneliness is a subjective experience, it is often examined using self-reports. Yet, researchers have started to use other-reports to examine loneliness. As previous research suggests that discrepancies between self- and other views might have important implications for adolescents’ mental health, the current study examines discrepancies in multi-informant reports on adolescents’ loneliness in relation with prosocial behavior, aggression, and adolescents’ parent-related loneliness. The sample consisted of 374 mother-adolescent dyads and 318 father-adolescent dyads (41.80% male, Mage = 15.67 years, SD = 1.25). Results indicated that informants used different reference points to assess adolescents’ peer-related loneliness, but were otherwise comparable. Moreover, informant discrepancies were associated with greater adolescents’ reported parent-related loneliness. The current study did not provide evidence that discrepancies were related to prosocial or aggressive behavior. The current study adds to the notion that other-reports on loneliness show substantial convergence with self-reports. In addition, this study indicates that the discrepancy between other- and self-reports on loneliness holds valuable information for adolescent socio-emotional adjustment." The instrument was administered to a sample of French-speaking adolescents (N = 625) and a carefully matched sample of Dutch-speaking adolescents (N = 630). Internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha), factor structure, and mean scores for the LAPPS subscales were highly similar across linguistic region. Finally, the LAPPS subscales showed a differential pattern of associations with an alternative measure of adolescent-parent relationships (i.e., the Emotional Autonomy Scale; EAS) in the French-speaking subsample. These results clearly show that the LAPPS is a reliable and valid measure of perceived parenting in French-speaking adolescents in Belgium. Suggestions for future research on the reliability and validity of the LAPPS are outlined."
