[Oral presentation] Red list of the (near) endemic plants of Burundi

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

Burundi is submitted to a very wide variety of ecological, geological and climatological factors, in particular a varied relief, wide altitudinal range, and highly diverse substrates and climate. This diversity explains the rich biodiversity of that small but densely populated territory which is situated in fact at the crossroad of several phytogeographical domains. Unfortunately, due to the extraordinary rate of environmental destruction and degradation due to rapid anthropogenic change, this biodiversity is dramatically and inexorably decreasing. In order to provide critical knowledge on plant conservation status, which was lacking, a study to assess that status for all endemic and near endemic vascular plants of Burundi has been performed. A total of 130 taxa has already been assessed, following the latest version of the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria and the Guidelines for Using the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria. Out of that number, 90% is threatened and was assessed as either vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered. A separate publication dealing with all 130 taxa and providing additional information is being prepared. This, as well as the result of the IUCN assessments will hopefully play an important role in the increasing initiatives to protect in situ degraded ecosystems as well as to protect individual species either in situ or ex situ.
