Modelling of the difference between the actual versus theoretical energy consumption for space heating and sanitary hot water

Boekbijdrage - Boekabstract Conferentiebijdrage

There are several programs that allow you to calculate the theoretical energy consumption of a dwelling, like the Epact software and the EPB-software. The Epact-software assigns an Energy Performance Certificate to an existing dwelling. The EPB (Energy Performance and Inner-Climate)-software can only be applied to newly-constructed buildings. Up until last year, the Energy Advice Procedure (EAP) was also an option. In this dissertation, the theoretical consumption for several dwellings has been calculated using the EAP and Epact software, with both programs calculating the energy consumption through physical building characteristics and characteristics of the installation for space heating and sanitary hot water. Both programs make different assumptions about these characteristics and other parameters, based on fixed values even though they might not really approach reality. These programs barely take consumer behavior into account, as they also use assumptions about the use of sanitary warm water and the inside temperature. The energy bills however give a clear indication of the actual energy consumption. To illustrate the difference between the actual and theoretical energy consumption, this dissertation will contain a literary study and an actual research based on a questionnaire for the inhabitants, the comparison of the EAP and Epact results and a pressurization measurement for each building. This dissertation will also expand on the results from the previous three dissertations with another 5 buildings, from a range of building periods. The requirements are largely the same: isolated dwelling with 4 permanent residents and a natural gas installation. The questionnaire will show the inhabitants attitude, habits and the features when it comes down to space heating and sanitary hot water. The pressurization test will verify the accuracy of the fixed values both software packages use for the air-tightness of the building (12 m³/h.m²). This data can help to optimize the Epact software and may explain the difference between actual and theoretical energy consumption. Keywords: actual energy consumption, theoretical energy consumption, heating, hot tap water
