Modeling and optimization of nutrient recovery from wastes : advances and limitations

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

Driven by economic, ecological, and community considerations, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are increasingly being transformed into water resource recovery facilities. This chapter provides a brief overview of the most important fertilizer quality specifications in order to compile essential model outputs with a focus on fertilizer commercialization, before elaborating on the limitations and advances in nutrient recovery process modeling and optimization. It focuses on anaerobic digestion of WWTP sludge and the most established nutrient recovery technologies available to date, as selected by Vaneeckhaute et al. The chapter discusses objectives and ongoing and future work in terms of nutrient recovery model (NRM) development and implementation. The construction of a generic NRM library based on detailed chemical solution speciation and reaction dynamics and aiming at fertilizer quantity and quality as model outputs is of preliminary importance in facilitating future nutrient recovery processes and treatment train implementations.
