Images of the Real

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

Ondertitel:Generic and Medial Hybridity in Peter Weiss' The Shadow of the Body of the Coachman
In her contribution on Peter Weiss’ The Shadow of the Body of the Coachman Inge Arteel looks at the experimental character of this short novel, that was written in the early fifties but not published until 1960. Arteel situates the text in the context of Weiss’ aesthetic and political views and analyses its narrative, generic and medial characteristics. Perception of reality and its description, as well as the tension between observation, cognition and knowledge of reality lie at the basis of the experimental techniques Weiss explores. Departing from moments of failure and impediment that the text addresses, Arteel shifts the focus to its generic and medial hybridity and the images this produces. With their formal instability and cognitive irritation these images resist integration in a predictable epistemological grid of reality. Instead, they are presented as real images that confront us with the bits and pieces of modernity.
