E-tandem et "interculturation": un "archipel" en chantier

Tijdschriftbijdrage - Tijdschriftartikel

Abstract This exploratory study aims to develop the interactional oral proficiency by implementing syn-chronous e-tandems outside of school hours. The target audience consists of academic under-graduate students in applied linguistics from the Francophone community and the Dutch-speak-ing community of Belgium respectively. The theoretical framework, the methodological principles, and a first assessment of the experiment (during the academic year 2015-16) are presented. The proposed progression, namely the first contacts in “intercomprehension” - the students speak first their own language-, is not unanimously perceived relevant. A more systematic research is then carried out in october 2016 with two groups of students: the first group speaks his own language (“intercomprehension”), the second, the foreign language. The results are that the Dutch-speaking community usually prefer to speak from the start in foreign language (the exolingual mode). They say that “the IC is a waste of time”, while the Francophone community is usually in favor of having one or two conversations in” intercomprehension”. They say that “they need to feel com-fortable for the first conversations”. We assume that these differences are culturally explicable. We can deduct that cultural dimensions would be “activated”, although it was not specifically expected. To continue the research and to promote intercultural pedagogy, we propose students to develop a communication project (description of a campaign to raise awareness of stereotypes). Different research issues would arise from this project. We will try to adress some of these ques-tions during the assessment of the tandem 2016-2017 experience.
