Double bond shear tests on NSM FRP strengthened members

Boekbijdrage - Boekhoofdstuk Conferentiebijdrage

The use of near surface mounted (NSM) fibers reinforced polymers (FRPs) is being increasingly recognized as a valid technique for strengthening of concrete members. The overall performance of the NSM FRP strengthened members is governed mainly by the properties of FRP-adhesive and adhesive-concrete interfaces. To asses the bond behaviour of NSM FRP strengthened members an experimental program, in the framework of a Round Robin Testing initiative, has been carried out based on a series of 18 double bond shear tests. Aim of the project is to investigate the feasibility of the adopted test method and to investigate the mechanisms of bond between the FRP and substrate material. Test parameters investigated were the type of FRP (carbon, glass and basalt bars), the FRP shape (round and square bars), FRP barsU+2019 surface configuration (smooth, ribbed and sand coated bars). Experimental results confirm the efficiency and reliability of the bond test method proposed and the bond effectiveness of the NSM technique for strengthening RC members.
