Delving into the potential of multi-receiver electromagnetic induction surveying for enhanced landfill exploration in view of ELFM

Boekbijdrage - Boekhoofdstuk Conferentiebijdrage

In this study we explore the potential of multi-receiver electromagnetic induction (EMI) surveying to support landfill exploration in view of Enhanced Landfill Mining (ELFM). The 15 ha study area was located in the Brussels-Capital Region of Belgium, and covered a non-sanitary landfill constructed in a former sand quarry. Using a motorized sensor set-up, EMI data were collected with a horizontal resolution of circa 0.5 m by 1.5 m. Detailed maps of variations in electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility, representative of different subsurface volumes, were produced. These allowed to locate the lateral boundaries of the landfill areas and provided indications of the types of waste materials that had been disposed. We conclude that a high-resolution multi-receiver EMI survey can add valuable information to landfill exploration in view of ELFM.
