Cryopreservation of gametes and gonadal tissue in small animals

Boek - Dissertatie

The ongoing decline of wild mammalian species underscores the critical need for conservation efforts. Cryopreservation emerges as a valuable biotechnological tool to preserve the genetic material of endangered animals. This technique allows for the storage of male and female gametes, gonadal tissues, embryos, and somatic tissues, offering potential solutions for animals that have passed away unexpectedly, undergone castration, or not yet reached reproductive maturity. Regarding female preservation, ovarian tissue preservation present a viable option for safeguarding the biodiversity of young endangered animals. This technique involves the storage of a substantial pool of follicles, which can later be cultivated in vitro to obtain oocytes for ART programs. Additionally, the transplantation of preserved ovarian tissue offers a valuable means of restoring fertility in animals that have undergone gonadotoxic treatments or experienced infertility. The primary objective of the thesis is to develop successful cryopreservation methods for gametes in both dogs and cats.
