The Austrian Netherlands' transit policy and the Port of ostend: solving the crisis of the 'Closure of the Scheldt'

The author shows how the port of Ostend was enhanced in the eighteenth century's second half and how, thanks to the new road and waterway network (transit policy), this harbour enlarged its hinterland.
