Project

The Reception of Early Christian Apocrypha and of the Apostolic Fathers. Reassessing the Late-Antique Manuscript Tradition and the Patristic Witnesses

The present project is concerned with the dynamics of the authority of texts at the margin of the Canon in Early Christianity, and its main objective is to question the nature of the authority enjoyed by Christian texts which eventually were not included in the New Testament. As such, it will assess their reception as mirrored in the Patristic testimonies of Clement of Alexandria, Origen and Eusebius of Caesarea. Also taken into account will be their reception history as reflected in their manuscripts, especially since it is sometimes suggested that the image formed bythe manuscript evidence of these texts might stand in contrast with that formed from Patristic testimonies.
