Preclinical research on the neuroprotective effects of the insulin-like growth factor IGF-I in a rat model for focal cerebral ischemia (IWT518)

IGF-I is neuroprotective in different models of hypoxic/ischemic brain injury. Seven studies revealed that administration of IGF-I after induction of the injury reduces the infarct volume, increases cell survival or improves functional outcome.

Our research addresses the therapeutic potential of IGF-I in neuroprotection after transient focal ischemic stroke using the endothelin-1 rat model. In the current proposal, we aim to study the working mechanism of IGF-I and the possible synergistic interaction with oestrogen treatment.
