Autonomous vehicles (AV) can potentially bring about profound changes in areas such as urban planning, mobility policy and the analysis of travel behaviour. While AV have the potential to improve transport supply and operations through better traffic coordination and reduction of traffic accidents, their impact on transport demand and spatial planning is rather complex. The objective of this research is to investigate how the degree of acceptance with regard to AV can be increased and what the consequences will be for spatial planning. To this end, residents of Ghent will be questioned by means of an online survey. Additionally, the effects of environmental characteristics on the interest in, the intention to use, and the willingness to pay for AV are analysed, using freely accessible data about the built environment. Next, predictions will be made about human behavior regarding a future with AV regarding the residential location, work location and travel behaviour. This research will provide new insights into the public acceptance of AV and the potential changes AV may bring to spatial planning. The findings of this study will be used to inform urban planners and mobility planners on how cities can proactively prepare for this new form of transport.
