Project

Elektrodialyse-Forward Osmose Systeem gedreven door hernieuwbare energie voor afvalwater regeneratie en brak water Desalination.

In this project, a hybrid membrane system based on electrodialysis (ED) and forward osmosis (FO), and driven by renewable energy (solar energy) is proposed to produce high quality water (potable) from secondary wastewater effluent or brackish water. This system is a novel system and has not been studied before, to the best of our knowledge. In this hybrid membrane system, feed water (secondary wastewater effluent or brackish water) will be drawn to the FO draw solution while the organic and inorganic substances (ions, compounds, colloids and particles) will be rejected. Then the "diluted" draw solution will be pumped to the solar energy driven ED as the diluate and the concentrate. In the ED unit, the diluate will be desalted and the high quality water will be produced; while the concentrate will be concentrated and be circulated to the FO unit and will act as the draw solution again. By using this way, high quality water is produced and no concentrate is discharged from this system, and only natural energies (solar energy and chemical potential) are applied in this system. Hence, a "green" desalination and water purification process can be achieved.
