Effecten van verhoogde klimaatvariabiliteit en klimaatextremen op de koolstofcyclus in terrestrische ecosystemen.
Recent studies predict increased climate variability and more frequent and more intense weather extremes such as heatwaves and droughts. Nonetheless, impacts of altered climate anomalies have not yet been accounted for in the considerations of the future evolution and vulnerability of terrestrial ecosystems. The aim of this project is to achieve an improved knowledge of the response of the terrestrial carbon cycle to climate variability and extremes. Specifically, we study the effects of extreme weather events on plant growth and its underlying processes, soil carbon stocks and ecosystem carbon sequestration over a wide range of ecosystems via analyses of a database of manipulation experiments that simulate climatic change and more frequent climate anomalies.
