The effect of individual, family and school characteristics on the transition and trajectories of urban students from high school to post-secondary education: A longitudinal study in Lima, Peru.

The dissertation is based on a previous study conducted in 2002 in ten large public urban and peri-urban schools in Lima, Peru when all the students (n= 1047) where attending third grade of primary education. Those students are expected to complete secondary education by year 2010. We will contact those students in 2010 when they are supposed to be in 11th grade to find out about their actual educational outcomes by that year. Then, we will follow those students who successfully completed high school to study their transition to higher education. The main objective of the study is to identify which individual, family and school factors predict students transition to higher education. However, since a student can choose among several options where to study higher education and what to study, not all the choices of the same quality, we will also describe which students choose which trajectory.

The dissertationwill include a series of three papers (that eventually will become chapters of the dissertation) dealing with the following topics: a) Successful transition to the end of secondary education, b) Successful transition to tertiary education and c) Students perceptions of their transitionto tertiary education and adaptation to higher education institutions. The first two papers will be mainly quantitative and the last one qualitative.

The design will be longitudinal with information on students cognitive and social abilities in primary education, their families socioeconomic variables, school variables (primary and secondary)as well as context variables gathered in 2002 and 2010. The study will use both quantitative and qualitative analyses. Regarding this last aspect, in addition to administering questionnaires to students and teachers, we plan to conduct semi-structured interviews with a sub-sample of students to study their perceptions regarding the transition to higher education and how they think and feel they are adapting to the higher education institutions.
