Device for hydrogen and electricity production

An apparatus comprising at least one semiconductor photoanode is described. The semiconductor photoanode comprises electric conducting macroscopic material coated at least in part by electric conducting nanoscopic material, whereby the electric conducting nanoscopic material of the photoanode is entirely coated with semiconductor layer and whereby the photoanode being positioned to receive light and to receive ambient air. It furthermore comprises at least one cathode comprising electric conducting macroscopic material coated at least in part by conduction nanoscopic material. The photoanode and cathode are conductively interconnected for electron flow and are being separated by a proton exchange membrane, forming a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) comprising such proton exchange membrane for the proton flow there through to the cathode. The membrane electrode assembly comprises a self-hydrating or water capturing material of the group consisting of water capturing microporous material and self-hydrating monolithic membrane. It further comprises an illumination controller, wherein the controller is a light filter.
