La representación espacial de México a través de la fotografía. Algunas miradas extranjeras (1890-1910)

Boek - Dissertatie

This research explores the relationship between space and photography under the perspectives of space theory proposed by human and political geography, particularly the work by Doreen Massey played a major influence. The thesis was organized in four sections, each analyzing a spatial dimension such as the event, scale, place and territory and their relationship with photography. Through the analysis of a daguerreotype and the work of four foreign photographers who visited the country between 1890 and 1910, this research offers a spatial and multifaceted vision of the Mexican space. The research argues against a clearcut definition of foreign representation and Mexican self-representation and opposes a perspective of a homogeneous national space. In addition, the research exposes the balance between fixity and mobility of place, bounded and experienced space, as well as it proves a strong link between photography and cartography.
