Justisigns: Developing research-based training resources on sign language interpreting in police settings in Europe

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

Legal interpreter educators must recognize the unique challenges of working in police settings. The effectiveness of interpreting with the police has a ripple effect for the rest of the case. The authors use a mixed-methods approach and identify potential barriers to access in police settings. Among these barriers are the inconsistent application and adherence of laws requiring qualified interpreters, the lack of awareness of police officers, and lack of understanding by deaf people. They used this information to develop a training “masterclass” for police, interpreters, and deaf persons.
