poster, Sofie De Smedt: Mass Digitisation of the Meise Botanic Garden Herbarium (BR)

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

The Herbarium of Meise Botanic Garden (BR) is in the top 15 herbaria worldwide. The collection comprises some 4 million specimens, which are important for scientific research. Digitisation of specimens includes imaging, transcription of label information, linking data and making the results publically accessible online. In addition to facilitating researchers’ access to specimens, digitisation also brings new possibilities for analysis and discovery of new data, such as the vast amount of information on handwritten labels. Through our mass digitisation projects DOE! & DOE!2, funded by the Flemish Government, 2.7 million herbarium sheets of our vascular and phycological collections were digitised. Most of the imaging was outsourced to Picturae, a dutch digitisation company, who started imaging in May 2016 with the use of an in-house conveyor belt installation. The data entry started one year later in 2017, with the help from Alembo, a company from Suriname who worked closely together with Picturae. Making these specimens openly available online on our virtual herbarium, www.botanicalcollections.be is valuable to scientific research as well as valorising of our collections.
