Christian and Islamic mysticism

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

(Neo-)Platonic philosophy and Judaic exegesis and apocalypticism paved the way for the gradual development of Christian mysticism. The existing techniques of Jewish exegesis inspired the Christian perspective of the Old Testament texts; the hidden meaning of the Song of Songs, for example, was already explored in Judaism. Augustine is undoubtedly one of the greatest minds in Christianity, and a man who had an important role in the development of Christian doctrine and spirituality in the Latin West. A peculiar feature of the British mystical culture is its connection to the solitary life, either through the authors of the mystical texts or their intended readers. A truly prodigious author who was deeply learned across nearly all of the religious sciences of his age, his works present a comprehensive mystical and theosophical system whose subsequent influence turned out to mark something of a watershed in the history of Islamic mystical thought.
