Flemish EU membership, ... if secession (ever) became an option

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

It is clear EU law specialists do not agree on how the EU should deal with newly independent states. What seems to be clear, though, is that the Lisbon Treaty does not provide an unambiguous legal framework to deal with internal fragmentation. Hence, the conclusion must be that the solution will have to come from the political world, of course within the confines of relevant existing legal frameworks and doctrines. This chapter discusses the Flemish case. We first show that secession is not imminent and then speculate on what would happen if it would ever become salient. We also address the current Belgian-EU relations and the positions of the Flemish political parties on European integration.
