This paper analyzes independent sentences introduced by the lexical sequence 'a ver si'. After poinling the limitations of its analysis as a discourse particle, it will be argued that formal and interpretative features of 'a ver si' sentences can be more appropriately explained by considering 'a ver si' as the lexical part of a semi-schematic construction, made up by the lexical sequence and a finite clause. In particular, three constructions are posited, which pair a modal meaning (verificative, optative, counter-expectative) with a set of formal features of the clause. Moreover, it will be argued that the diversity of pragmatic functions or a ver si identified in previous literature can be explained through the interaction of the basic modal meanings of each constructions and general pragmatic principies, such as conditions on speech acts.
