Harmonization in autoantibody testing.

Boek - Dissertatie

Reliable autoantibody (AAb) detection is important for early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of autoimmune disorders. However, in contrast to testing for classical clinical chemistry analytes, AAb testing is complex and constantly evolving. Moreover, there is a lack of standardization. Nevertheless, it is important that laboratories that provide autoimmune tests comply with the requirements set forward by general international accreditation bodies. A major challenge to improve diagnostic accuracy is to harmonize or even standardize AAb analyses. Since reference materials and procedures for AAb assays are lacking, standardization is a very complex task. Harmonization of procedures and behaviours however, is a more feasible target. Harmonization initiatives have to be validated against clinically usefulness, should contain all phases of the testing process and must be translated into clinical practice in a coordinated way to avoid confusion and the risk of potentially harmful errors for the patient. Our PhD project focuses on- Harmonization in anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) testing in the diagnosis of ANA associated rheumatic diseases - Harmonization in serological testing for rheumatoid arthritis
